Anne Arundel County was established in 1650 and named for Lady Anne Arundell, the wife of Cecilius Calvert, Second Lord Baltimore. Annapolis later became the county seat and developed into the county’s center for government, maritime activity, education, and regional commerce.

The Chesapeake Bay, Severn River, South River, Magothy River, Patuxent River, and their tributaries shaped settlement and transportation throughout the county. Anne Arundel County Transit operates fare-free bus routes connecting destinations such as Annapolis Mall, BWI Airport, Arundel Mills, Pasadena, Odenton, Glen Burnie, and Parole. MARC’s Penn Line serves both BWI Marshall Rail Station and Odenton, providing service toward Baltimore, New Carrollton, and Washington Union Station. BWI Rail Station also offers Amtrak connections and a free airport shuttle. Light RailLink serves BWI Airport, the BWI Business District, Linthicum, North Linthicum, and Glen Burnie before continuing toward Baltimore.
