THE BET

Hagan Realty was founded on a bet made in 2001 between Frank Hagan and Jed Williams. Jed and his grandfather Frank, had made a frequent habit of such bets; a tradition they'd borrowed from Mortimer and Randolph in the 1983 movie "Trading Places." In 2001, Frank was retiring from law and looking to move to the warmer climes of South Florida. He and Jed interviewed three of the top Realtors in Montgomery County to list and sell Frank's home in Rockville. Each of the agents walked directly into the kitchen, sat down, and proceeded to dictate what the price of the home would be and tout how quickly they could sell it; not one of them looked at the house before saying what it was worth or asked Frank's timeline or goals for selling before saying how important it was they would sell it “quickly”. After the 3rd interview, Jed bet Frank that, with their experience in commercial real estate and law, they could do far better than any of the agents had said was possible. Frank accepted the bet, and Jed got to work marketing and selling the house. Three months later, they closed on the sale of Frank's property at $42,000 more than the highest price any of the three Realtors had told them was possible. Jed and Frank co-founded Hagan Realty the very next day.




FRANK HAGAN

Born in Washington, DC in 1933; grew up in NE in what’s come to be known as Brookland. At 18, Frank joined the US Marine Corps where he became an officer and a helicopter pilot. Upon leaving the Marines, he obtained his bachelors from American University and his juris doctorate from the University of Baltimore. Frank’s legal career included years in private practice, serving as legal counsel to the then largest mortgage banking firm in the US, the General Counsel for the Merit Systems Protection Board, and as a consultant for Woodfine Suites and Marriott on their domestic and international acquisitions.

JED WILLIAMS

Jed was raised in Maryland by his grandparents, Frank and Betty Hagan. He grew up working for his grandfather’s law practice, doing research for commercial and hotel deals Frank would broker. He paid his way through college at McGill University in Canada and UNSW in Australia by doing IT consulting, primarily to commercial real estate companies in both the US and Australia. He returned to the US after receiving his degrees in finance, information systems, and economics, and co-founded Hagan Realty with his grandfather shortly thereafter. In 2004, Jed took over as the company’s Principal Broker and has served in that capacity ever since.
